Schizophrenia is a leading cause of disability and premature mortality in the world. There are major unmet needs in schizophrenia that are not addressed by current antipsychotic treatment. Moreover, antipsychotic drugs are ineffective or not tolerated in two thirds of patients with schizophrenia. This symposium aims to consider the challenges facing the field, and provide a cutting-edge update on the latest developments in the treatment of schizophrenia informed by advances in understanding of the neurobiology underlying the disorder.
