Carlos M. Grilo, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Program for Obesity, Weight, and Eating Research (POWER) at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Grilo is also Professor of Psychology at Yale University and affiliated faculty at the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. Previously, Dr. Grilo served as Director of Psychology at the Yale Psychiatric Institute (1993-2000).
His primary research focus is on binge eating, eating disorders, and obesity and his secondary interests include psychopathology, co-morbidity, addictions, and personality disorders. Dr. Grilo’s specific areas of expertise include randomized controlled comparative treatment trials, studies of predictors and moderators of treatments outcomes, and multi-method assessment and longitudinal studies. Dr. Grilo has been the recipient of numerous federal and foundation research grants and has served as Principal Investigator on ten grants from the National Institutes of Health including two K24 Mid-Career Investigator Awards in Eating and Weight Disorders. Dr. Grilo’s research program on eating/weight disorders has been fully and continuously externally funded since 1996. With regard to his secondary research interests in psychopathology and co-morbidity, Dr. Grilo also served as co-PI of the NIMH-funded multi-site Collaborative Longitudinal Disorders Study (1996-2010). Dr. Grilo currently serves as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology and serves on the editorial boards of seven professional journals including Behaviour Research and Therapy, International Journal of Eating Disorders, Obesity, and Obesity Surgery. Dr. Grilo has published 350 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, 20 chapters on binge eating disorder and obesity, over 300 abstracts at scientific meetings, authored one book (Eating and Weight Disorders, published by Psychology Press/Taylor & Francis), and co-edited one book (Treatment of Eating Disorders, published by Guilford Press).
Dr. Grilo completed his undergraduate education at Brown University (1983) and received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Pittsburgh (1991). Following an internship (1990) and a fellowship (1991) at the Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital, Dr. Grilo completed postdoctoral training at Yale University (1992), and then joined the faculty at Yale University.
