D. Jeffrey Newport is Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where serves as Director of Women’s Reproductive Mental Health. Dr. Newport completed a graduate theological degree before receiving his medical degree from the University of South Carolina. He subsequently completed psychiatric residency and a master’s degree in clinical research at Emory University. He has received numerous research and teaching awards and has published extensively with articles appearing in JAMA, American Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Obsetrics & Gynecology, etc. Dr. Newport’s research focuses on women’s mental health with an emphasis on the psychobiology of psychiatric illness and substance use disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period, the pharmacokinetics of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and lactation, and the persistent biobehavioral impact of early life adverse experiences.
